  1. 1895-1958. Hungarian politician, prime
  2. minister 1953-55 and 1956. He led the
  3. Hungarian revolt against Soviet domination in
  4. 1956, for which he was executed. Nagy, an
  5. Austro-Hungarian prisoner of war in Siberia
  6. during World War I, became a Soviet citizen
  7. after the Russian Revolution, and lived in
  8. the USSR 1930-44. In 1953, after Stalin's
  9. death, he became prime minister, introducing
  10. liberal measures such as encouraging the
  11. production of consumer goods, but was
  12. dismissed 1955 by hardline Stalinist premier
  13. Rakosi. Reappointed Oct 1956 during the
  14. Hungarian uprising, he began taking
  15. liberalization further than the Soviets
  16. wanted, for example announcing Hungarian
  17. withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact. Soviet
  18. troops entered Budapest, and Nagy was
  19. dismissed Nov 1956. He was captured by the
  20. KGB and shot. His remains were relocated in
  21. Budapest, and in 1989 the Hungarian Supreme
  22. Court recognized his leadership of a
  23. legitimate government and quashed his
  24. conviction for treachery.
